In January 2009 Anne Holloway decided that her website for Tanglewood House needed a refresh. The site had been hosted by Geocities and had done its job for many years, but it was a very out-of date design, was difficult to update and maintain and did not offer any scope for integrating modern web features.
Rob Elliott at Strathview Consultants based in Strathpeffer, 40 miles from Ullapool, was commisioned to design a new website. The old site was removed and while the final site was being developed a temporary site was put up which had more content and a more modern look but it was not intended to be the final design.
The final site went live in April 2009 and is based on wikidot. Wikidot provides a professional platform for developing wikis which are collaborative websites. You can read more about wikis here. In the case of the Tanglewood House website it is not a wiki as such but a "normal" website. However, the advantage of using wikidot as the platform is that it enables the client (and others if given the relevant permissions) to update the site without initially needing extensive knowledge or lengthy training. Wikidot sites have a fully customisable design using CSS and enable embedding of a vast range of external content and web2.0 components.
The wonderful banner photo at the top of each page of the website showing Tanglewood House with the Ben Dearig mountains in the background was taken by Simon Gill. You can contact Simon via Tanglewood House. Click on the photo below to see a larger image.
